The Construction of Gothic Terror in Ann Radcliffe’s Works—A Case Study of The Mysteries of Udolpho
Abstract: Ann Radcliffe was a major representative of English Gothic fiction in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries and is often referred to as “the grandmother of Gothic writers”, occupying an important position in the history of Gothic literature. Building upon the Gothic tradition established by Horace Walpole, she introduced significant innovations by moving beyond an excessive reliance on overt terror and supernatural spectacle, and was the first to systematically incorporate Romantic aesthetics and emotional expression into Gothic fiction. Through detailed depictions of natural landscapes and architectural spaces, Radcliffe created a pervasive atmosphere of gloom and terror; at the same time, she advanced the narrative by portraying the protagonists’ inner anxiety, unease, and imagination, thereby shifting the source of fear to the psychological level. The Mysteries of Udolpho is Radcliffe’s most representative work and embodies the artistic characteristics of her “terror Gothic” mode. Centered on the Gothic space of Udolpho Castle, the novel integrates dark settings, psychological fantasy, and character construction, presenting the image of a young woman who maintains reason and moral integrity while confronting danger, and revealing a distinct awareness of female subjectivity. The novel was widely read in its own time and exerted a profound influence on the development of nineteenth-century Gothic fiction and later horror literature.
