Deconstruction of Dualism—Andrew’s Hybrid Identity in Oxherding Tale
Abstract:
Identity has been a motif drawing much attention of most writers. Charles Johnson, a contempo-rary Afro-American writer, lays emphasis on the theme of identity, race, liberation and other themes. Bearing the intention of breaking conventional stylized slave-narrative, Charles Johnson coins the conception what he calls “philosophical black fiction”. Oxherding Tale, Johnson’s second novel published in 1982, is a typical “philosophical black fiction”, which unfolds the journey from slavery to freedom of the protagonist, Andrew Hawkins, and exposes the identity crisis faced by Afro-Americans in the multiple cultures. Taking this as a point of departure, this paper is to explore how Andrew gets rid of racial dilemma by deconstructing the mind of dualism finally identifies his hybrid identity.
