《蒙古秘史》中文化负载词的英译对比分析——以罗依果和奥侬英译本为例

Comparative Analysis of English Translations of Culture Loaded Words in The Secret History of the Mongols—Taking the English Translation of Igor de Rachewiltz and Onon for Examples

摘要: 作为蒙古民族三大历史著作之一的《蒙古秘史》，是一部具有重要历史价值和研究意义的著作，其英译本对于传播蒙古文化起着重要作用。本论文聚焦于《蒙古秘史》的两个全英译本——罗依果英译本和奥侬英译本，对其五类文化负载词进行对比分析，最终总结出两位译者的翻译倾向，提出建议以助译者在今后文化负载词英译时遇到内涵传播与读者接受相悖时做出取舍。研究表明，罗依果的翻译倾向以目的语读者接受度为主，而奥侬的翻译倾向则以蒙古文化内涵的向外传播为主，在之后的翻译实践中译者应平衡好目的语读者接受与文化内涵传播两项任务，助力中国文化广泛传播。

Abstract: As one of the three major historical works of the Mongolian nation, The Secret History of the Mongols holds significant historical value and research importance. Its English translations play a crucial role in disseminating Mongolian culture. This paper focuses on two complete English translations of The Secret History of the Mongols: the translations by Igor de Rachewiltz and by Onon. Through a comparative analysis of five categories of culture-loaded words in these translations, the thesis ultimately summarizes the translation tendencies of the two translators and provides suggestions to help translators make decisions when facing the conflict between conveying cultural connotations and reader acceptance in the English translation of culture-loaded words. This research shows that Rachewiltz’s translation tendency focuses more on the readability for target language readers, while Onon’s translation tendency prioritizes the dissemination of Mongolian cultural connotations to the outside world. In the future, translators should strike a balance between the readability for target language readers and the dissemination of cultural connotations, thereby facilitating the widespread dissemination of Chinese culture.
