Bullying Victimization and Aggressive Behavior among Middle School Students: The Role of Moral Disengagement and the Dual-System of Self-Control
Abstract: Using a questionnaire survey, this study examines the impact of bullying victimization on aggressive behavior and its underlying mechanisms among 500 middle school students in Chongqing, China. The findings are as follows: (1) Bullying victimization positively predicts aggressive behavior; (2) Moral disengagement partially mediates the relationship between bullying victimization and aggressive behavior; (3) The direct effect of bullying victimization on aggressive behavior is moderated by the control system within the dual system of self-control: the predictive effect of bullying victimization on aggressive behavior is more pronounced among adolescents with lower self-control. This study sheds light on the mechanisms underlying the relationship between bullying victimization and aggressive behavior, providing a basis for interventions targeting aggressive behavior from the perspectives of moral disengagement and self-control.
