Abstract: Although envy, as a universal social emotion, has been extensively explored in terms of its psychological mechanisms, systematic research on its manifestation in workplace contexts remains nascent. With the intensification of organizational competition, workplace envy has become increasingly prevalent. This emotion not only impacts individuals’ mental health and job performance but also exerts profound effects on interpersonal relationships and organizational outcomes. However, existing literature continues to exhibit conflicting findings on core issues such as “how envy influences work performance,” highlighting an urgent need to clarify its intrinsic mechanisms. Adopting the lens of workplace envy, this paper synthesizes divergent perspectives across three dimensions—conceptual definitions, antecedents, and consequences—to provide a comprehensive framework for understanding the complex dynamics of envy in organizational settings and its dual impact on individuals and organizations.
