The Impact of Short Video Addiction on Attentional Network Function
Abstract: The increasing prevalence of short video platforms has sparked concerns about their cognitive effects, particularly on attentional function in individuals with short video addiction. Grounded in the attentional network model, this study utilized the Attentional Network Task (ANT) to assess the performance of individuals with short video addiction across three attentional networks: alerting, orienting, and conflict networks. Participants were classified into an addiction group and a non-addiction group using a validated short video addiction scale, and their reaction times in the ANT were recorded. Results indicated that individuals with short video addiction exhibited significantly poorer performance in the orienting network, suggesting impairments in utilizing spatial cues for attentional shifts. However, no significant differences were observed between the two groups in the alerting network and the conflict network. This study elucidates the impact of short video addiction on attentional function, offering empirical evidence for its cognitive mechanisms and informing interventions for attention-related issues.
