Abstract: In the field of contemporary literary studies, the in-depth analysis of narrative techniques remains a crucial approach to exploring the connotations and values of literary works. This paper will interpret the unreliable narration of the protagonist Almásy in Michael Ondaatje’s “The English Patient”. Firstly, by delving into the text, it reveals the manifestations of Almásy’s unreliable narration in terms of deviations in factual storytelling and distortions in value judgments. Then, it explores the reasons behind this unreliable narration from the perspectives of narrative purpose and personal experiences. Finally, it discusses the narrative effects brought about by this unreliable narration, such as enriching the layers of the story and provoking readers’ thoughts, thereby uncovering the impact of this narrative technique on the depth of the work and the reader’s experience.
