A Comparative Study of Cultural Loaded Words Translation in The Travels of Lao Can from the Perspective of Translator’s Behavior Criticism

摘要: 《老残游记》蕴含丰富的文化意象与地域特色词汇，一直是翻译领域关注的焦点。本研究基于译者行为批评视角，通过分析汉学家哈罗德·谢迪克与本土翻译家杨宪益在处理文化负载词时体现的译者行为，进行对比研究，探讨了译者保持原文文化内涵与目标语读者需求之间平衡的方法及原因。本研究对推动此类中国文学典籍的翻译批评研究提供新视角，为全球化语境下中国文学典籍外译提供了兼顾文化求真与传播务实的实践范式。

Abstract: The Travels of Lao Can is renowned for its rich cultural imagery and region-specific vocabulary, making it a focal point in translation studies. From the perspective of the Critical Theory of Translator’s Behavior, this study conducts a comparative analysis of how cultural-loaded terms are handled by Sinologist Harold Shadick and native translator Yang Xianyi. By examining their distinct translational strategies, the research explores the methods and rationale behind balancing cultural authenticity with target readers’ expectations. This work offers a novel lens for advancing critical studies on translating Chinese literary classics and proposes a practical framework that reconciles cultural fidelity with pragmatic dissemination in the globalized context.
