On Elster’s Methodological Individualism

摘要: 乔恩·埃尔斯特(Jon Elster)是分析的马克思主义的杰出代表。他于1985年出版了其在马克思主义理论研究方面的代表作——《理解马克思》。他在书中运用方法论个人主义与理性选择理论，对“马克思哲学中活的东西和死的东西”作出评判。但是，埃尔斯特并没有停留在纯粹理论的探讨上，理论最终是为现实服务的，最终要回答人类的实际需求和发展的现实问题。因此，埃尔斯特在对方法论做出深入探索的基础上，将他的兴趣扩展到对现实社会进行研究，将方法论延伸至理性选择上。方法论个人主义并非一开始在哲学讨论范畴，是埃尔斯特将其引入到马克思主义哲学当中，并加以阐释，本文旨在讨论埃尔斯特的方法论个人主义的基本内涵，明确其定义，追溯其缘由，并以此来研究方法论个人主义对马克思主义哲学有何启示。

Abstract: Jon Elster is an eminent representative of analytical Marxism. In 1985, he published , his seminal work in Marxist theoretical research, where he employed methodological individualism and rational choice theory to evaluate “the living and the dead in Marxist philosophy.” However, Elster did not remain confined to purely theoretical exploration; he emphasized that theory ultimately serves practical purposes and addresses real-world human needs and developmental issues. Thus, based on his in-depth exploration of methodology, Elster extended his research to the study of real social phenomena and further applied his methodology to rational choice. Methodological individualism was not initially a concept within philosophical discourse; it was Elster who introduced it into Marxist philosophy and provided a systematic elaboration. This paper aims to examine the basic connotation of Elster’s methodological individualism, clarify its definition, trace its origins, and explore its implications for Marxist philosophy.
