Abstract: There are many components of world literature, among which a key factor is English and American literature, which carries rich historical and cultural connotations in many classic works and can showcase very unique linguistic and artistic charm. The characteristics of English and American literary works are distinct, mainly reflected in language style, thematic expression, narrative structure, and other aspects. Systemic functional linguistics, as a crucial language research theory, can provide a dynamic research perspective for the practical application of language. Under the influence of systemic functional linguistics theory, it can not only break the constraints of traditional formalism’s static research limitations, but also emphasize the diversity and complexity of language in specific contexts. The advantages of applying systemic functional linguistics in the appreciation of English and American literature are significant. It can not only reveal the deep relationship between language and literary meaning, but also provide readers with assistance in understanding the connotation of literary works and the background of the times.
