From Virtual Interaction to Emotional Attachment—Emotional Need Satisfaction and Identity Construction in Social Interaction
Abstract: This study aims to explore the satisfaction of emotional needs and identity construction in virtual social interaction. Taking the cloud game “Aobi Island” as an example, it analyzes players’ emotional attachment and identity from a psychological perspective. The research adopted the in-depth interview method and case analysis method. Eight players of different ages and gaming experiences were selected for interviews, and combined with the communication and marketing activities of “Aobi Island” for analysis. The research findings are as follows: (1) The game meets the psychological needs of players through three mechanisms: autonomy support (character customization), competency feedback (task rewards), and sense of belonging creation (community interaction). (2) Players complete identity anchoring at the individual and group levels through virtual identities (such as the “Aobi” image) and community tags (such as “Veteran player”). (3) The formation of emotional attachment follows the path of “need satisfaction → identity construction → emotional accumulation”. Virtual social interaction meets the emotional needs of players through emotional expression and social behaviors, promotes the formation of emotional attachment, and the identity construction of players in the virtual world also enhances their sense of identity and belonging to the game community. The research conclusion points out that emotional attachment and identity construction have significant influences on players’ gaming experience and sense of community belonging, providing a psychological perspective for the emotional mechanism in virtual social interaction and revealing the psychological essence of emotional communication in simulation games.
