Self-Realization through Spatial Transitions: Ecological Consciousness in “A Sunrise on the Veld”
Abstract: This paper focuses on Doris Lessing’s short story “A Sunrise on the Veld” and, drawing upon recent developments in deep ecology, analyzes how the boy undergoes an initial awakening of ecological selfhood through his contact with nature, focusing on the narrative’s spatial transitions. Through the sequence of spaces “home-veld-death-home” the story illustrates the psychological growth of the boy as he moves from an egocentric desire for control to a respectful acknowledgment of natural laws, and uncovers the deeper ecological philosophy embedded in this journey of growth and its implications for contemporary ecological education.
