概念符际互补视角下的国学典籍漫画翻译研究
A Study on the Translation of Chinese Classics Comics from the Perspective of Ideational Intersemiotic Complementarity

摘要: 国学典籍是中国传统文化的精髓,在视觉文化盛行的当下,国学典籍的对外译介亟需开拓漫画等多模态形式的传播载体。漫画语篇是融合图像、文字等多种符号的多模态语篇,这些符号相互配合,共同构建语篇的整体意义。本文以“符际互补”理论为基础,研究漫画家蔡志忠创作的国学典籍改编漫画作品在其英译过程中,视觉模态和语言模态在概念层面的符际互补关系对译者翻译决策产生的影响。研究聚焦概念符际互补六种关系(重复、同义、反义、下义、部分–整体和搭配)在漫画翻译中的具体体现及其对译者的作用机制。结果表明,译者在符际互补关系的引导下,灵活运用省略、意译、增译等翻译策略,使漫画中富含的深奥而抽象的哲理得以生动、清晰地诠释,有效降低了目标语读者的理解门槛,这对国学典籍作品在海外的传播和接受发挥了关键作用。
Abstract: Chinese classics represent the quintessence of traditional Chinese culture. In the current era dominated by visual culture, there is an urgent need to explore multimodal forms of dissemination, such as comics, for the international translation and introduction of these classics. Comic discourse is a multimodal discourse integrating various semiotic resources such as images and text. These semiotic resources collaborate to construct the overall meaning of the discourse. Based on the theory of Intersemiotic Complementarity (ISC), this paper investigates the impact of the ideational intersemiotic complementary relationship between the visual and verbal modes on translators’ decision-making during the English translation of Chinese classics comics adapted by the renowned cartoonist Tsai Chih Chung. The study focuses on the manifestation of the six types of ideational ISC relations (namely repetition, synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy, meronymy and collocation) within comic translation and their functional mechanisms for translators. The findings indicate that, guided by these ISC relations, translators flexibly employ strategies such as omission, paraphrase, and amplification. This enables the vivid and clear interpretation of the profound and abstract philosophical concepts embedded within the comics, effectively lowering the comprehension threshold for target-language readers. This plays a crucial role in facilitating the overseas dissemination and reception of Chinese classics.
