经典叙事学视角下《西游记》蓝诗玲英译本研究

A Study on the English Translation of Monkey King: Journey to the West by Julia Lovell from the Perspective of Classic Narratology

摘要: 英国汉学家蓝诗玲新译《猴王：西游记》广受好评，推动了中国古典小说《西游记》在英语世界的再经典化。本文基于经典叙事学理论，通过文本细读，从叙事时间、叙事空间、话语/思想呈现方式、展示和讲述、元叙事、易读性和可读性六个叙事元素研究蓝译本的叙事建构策略和翻译叙事特征。研究发现，蓝诗玲利用各种叙事手段缩短叙事时间、再现叙事空间、转换话语呈现方式、强化不同叙事的展示和讲述效果、改写韵文形式的元叙事话语，产出了容易阅读又生动有趣的译文，其翻译叙事策略将为中国古典小说“走出去”提供借鉴和参考。

Abstract: Monkey King: Journey to the West translated by British sinologist Julia Lovell has garnered widespread recognition and fueled the global craze for the Chinese masterpiece across the English world. This study, based on classic narratology, aims to dissect narrative inclinations in Lovell’s translation, examining the six aspects of narrative time, narrative space, speech/thought presentation, showing vs. telling, metanarrative, and legibility vs. readability. Its findings reveal that Lovell, drawing on various narrative means, shortened the narrative duration, restored the narrative space, converted the speech presentation methods, enhanced the effect of showing and telling in targeted texts, and rewrote verse-dominant metanarratives, thereby producing a highly legible translation with commendable readability. Her narrative inclinations will hopefully offer insights into the going out of other classic Chinese novels.
