《孙子兵法》格里菲斯英译本的美学特征再现
On the Recreation of the Aesthetic Features in Griffith’s English Translation of The Art of War
摘要: 中华文化典籍的海外传播是全球化时代中华文化“走出去”战略的重要实践,军事经典《孙子兵法》的译介,凸显了其在跨文化交流中的价值。本文以塞缪尔·格里菲斯1963年英译本为研究对象,基于翻译美学理论框架,聚焦术语形式美、修辞结构美与音韵节奏美三重维度,系统解构其对中国古典兵学美学的重构策略。格译本在文言诗性话语向现代英语转换中,既完整保留核心术语的东方意蕴,又通过主从句重构、音韵移植等策略,在阐明军事思想的同时又保留了形式美。这种美学维度的双重视角分析,不仅有利于实现文化移植,更构建起跨文化阐释的对话空间,为典籍翻译理论提供“形神共构”的实践范式,助推中华文化国际传播的深度话语建构。
Abstract: The overseas dissemination of Chinese cultural classics is a key part of the “Going Global” strategy for Chinese culture in the global era. The translation of military classics, especially The Art of War, underscores its significance in cross-cultural communication. This study centers on Samuel B. Griffith’s 1963 English translation, analyzing it through the lens of translation aesthetics. It focuses on three aspects: the formal beauty of terms, the structural beauty of rhetoric, and the rhythmic beauty of phonetics in the military classics. The research systematically explores Griffith’s strategies in reconstructing the aesthetics of classical Chinese military science. During the shift from classical Chinese poetic discourse to modern English, Griffith’s translation retains the Eastern charm of key terms. Through main and subordinate clause reconstruction and phonetic transplantation, it balances clarifying military ideas and preserving formal aesthetics. This dual-perspective analysis of aesthetics facilitates cultural transplantation and builds a dialogue space for cross-cultural interpretation. It also offers a “form and spirit co-construction” model for classic translation theory, promoting the deep discourse construction of Chinese culture’s international communication.
