Abstract: With the acceleration of globalization and the development of digital technology, Chinese social media platforms such as Xiaohongshu and TikTok have gradually attracted a large number of foreign users. This study focuses on the linguistic practices of foreign users on these two platforms. By constructing a multilingual corpus, combining in-depth interviews and text analysis, it systematically explores their linguistic variations, code-switching, and the creation of new vocabulary, and further analyzes the cultural backgrounds and identity negotiations reflected by these linguistic features. The study finds that foreign users’ language use exhibits significant characteristics of cross-cultural integration, carrying imprints of their own cultures while reflecting adaptation and integration into Chinese culture. Their linguistic practices serve as an important carrier for negotiating and constructing multiple identities. Meanwhile, this study has observed significant heterogeneity within the user group. The causes of linguistic phenomena are not only related to the macro cultural context but also closely associated with factors such as individuals’ learning experiences and the behavioral habits of specific online communities.
