概念隐喻视域下《红楼梦》人物姓名英译对比研究
A Comparative Study of the English Translations of Character Names in The Dream of the Red Chamber from the Perspective of Conceptual Metaphor
摘要: 在《红楼梦》中，曹雪芹构建了一个隐喻的世界，这些隐喻成为小说不可分割的一部分。隐喻对小说主题的表达和人物形象的塑造起到了推动作用。隐喻研究是《红楼梦》翻译的重要组成部分。隐喻通常被认为是一种修辞现象，而大多数翻译研究仅仅从语言层面来探讨隐喻，并没有从根本上解决隐喻翻译中理解与表达之间的矛盾。根据这一理解，认知语言学认为隐喻是抽象范畴概念化的基本方式；同时，隐喻研究也逐渐从纯粹的修辞学视角转移到更系统的认知语言学视角。本文采用认知语言学的概念隐喻理论，借助美国语言学家乔治·莱考夫和美国哲学家马克·约翰逊创作的语言学著作《我们赖以生存的隐喻》来探讨霍克斯译本《红楼梦》中人物名字的英译，通过文化语境和文学语境来分析人物名字隐喻的英译，从而研究其优缺点。
Abstract: In The Dream of the Red Chamber, Cao Xueqin builds a world full of metaphors that become an inseparable part of the novel. Metaphors contribute to the expression of the novel’s theme and the shaping of characters. The study of metaphor is an important part of the translation of The Dream of the Red Chamber. Metaphor is usually regarded as a rhetorical phenomenon, and most translation studies explore metaphor only from the linguistic level and do not fundamentally resolve the contradiction between understanding and expression in metaphorical translation. This paper adopts the conceptual metaphor theory of cognitive linguistics to explore the English translation of characters’ names in Hawkes’ translation of The Dream of the Red Chamber with the help of the linguistic work Metaphors We Live By, written by Lakoff and Johnson, and analyzes the English translations of the characters’ name metaphors through the cultural contexts and literary contexts, so as to study their strengths and weaknesses.
