John Fiske’s Theory of Popular Culture Economy
Abstract: John Fiske’s theory of popular culture economy fundamentally challenges the critical tradition of the Frankfurt School by constructing a novel analytical framework. It proposes a dualistic dialectical model comprising two circulation modes: the financial economy, centered on monetary transactions, and the cultural economy, which focuses on the production and dissemination of meanings and pleasures. Fiske emphasizes the agency of the masses, revealing a dynamic interplay between economic power and cultural resistance under capitalism. Despite their material vulnerability, the masses accumulate cultural capital—such as meanings, pleasures, and social identities—to subvert ideological hegemony. By overturning elitist cultural perspectives and integrating everyday practices into scholarly inquiry, Fiske’s theory offers a critical lens to analyze the resistant potential embedded in contemporary popular culture.
