Abstract: Perfectionism is a complex personality trait with both positive and negative effects. Building upon existing literature, this paper provides a narrative review of perfectionism’s concept, theories, causes, and impacts. Research indicates that perfectionism’s development is influenced by genetic factors while being profoundly shaped by family upbringing, societal expectations, and cultural environments. Relevant theoretical models reveal its multidimensional characteristics and distinct pathways of action: positive perfectionism enhances learning engagement, academic achievement, and psychological adjustment, whereas negative perfectionism increases significant risks of depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and eating disorders. Regarding interventions, this paper recommends cognitive behavioral therapy and logotherapy to help individuals develop healthy self-perception and value systems. Simultaneously, societal advocacy for diverse definitions of success and inclusive environments is proposed. Future research should deepen exploration of perfectionism's positive functions while incorporating cross-cultural comparisons and localized studies to comprehensively elucidate its formation mechanisms and operational pathways.
