Abstract: Sherlock Holmes, a series of detective stories penned by British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is renowned for its linguistically astute dialogues rich with conversational implicature. Grounded in the theory of the Cooperative Principle (CP), this paper presents an in-depth analysis of the conversations within the collection, elucidating how characters convey specific implicatures by flouting the four maxims of the CP. Through violations of the maxims of Quantity, Quality, Relation, and Manner, the characters are successfully portrayed with complexity and depth, simultaneously driving the plot forward with precision. These deliberate violations not only enhance the suspense and dramatic tension of the narrative but also afford readers ample room for interpretation. By examining specific conversational excerpts, this study further explores the motivations behind and effects of these floutings, alongside a deeper excavation of the implied meanings, thereby revealing the author’s masterful craftsmanship in employing linguistic artistry. This research not only enriches the application studies of the Cooperative Principle in practical communication but also provides a novel perspective and methodology for the analysis of dialogue in literary works.
