On the Question of “Liberty and Necessity” in Hume’s A Treatise of Human Nature

摘要: “自由与必然”的关系问题由来已久，两千多年来始终受到哲学家们的持续关注。对于这一颇具难度的哲学议题，不同流派的哲学家持有截然不同的观点，这些观点大致可归为决定论、非决定论、相容论与不相容论等主要类别。本文将聚焦休谟《人性论》中关于“自由与必然”的论述，深入探讨休谟对这一问题的看法，从而加深我们对“自由与必然”议题的认识和理解。论述将围绕三个方面展开：一是休谟在《人性论》中对“必然”的理解，二是休谟在《人性论》中对“自由”的理解，三是休谟在《人性论》中对“自由与必然”关系的整体认知。希望通过本文的梳理与分析，既能丰富“自由与必然”关系的理论研究，也能为人们在现实社会生活中应对“自由与必然”相关问题提供更多思路与选择。

Abstract: The problem of the relationship between “liberty and necessity” has a long history and has remained a persistent focus of philosophical inquiry for over two millennia. As a complex and challenging issue, it has elicited divergent views among philosophers from different schools of thought, which may broadly be categorized into determinism, indeterminism, compatibilism, and incompatibilism. This paper concentrates on Hume’s discussion of “liberty and necessity” in A Treatise of Human Nature, with the aim of examining his views on the matter and thereby deepening our understanding of this enduring philosophical problem. The discussion will proceed along three lines: first, Hume’s conception of “necessity” in the A Treatise of Human Nature; second, his conception of “liberty”; and third, his overall account of the relation between “liberty and necessity.” It is hoped that the analysis offered here will not only enrich theoretical research on the relation between “liberty and necessity” but also provide new perspectives and options for addressing related issues in contemporary social life.
