The Thought of Equal Opportunity in Rawls’ A Theory of Justice

Abstract: Rawls provided a realistic path for human society in A Theory of Justice, attempting to resolve inequality in reality through the principles of equality, freedom, and equal opportunity of justice. By analyzing the possibility of Rawls’ two principles of justice in reality and the external evaluation of this viewpoint, this paper discusses the rationality of the principles of justice and expands Rawls’ social view through the application of the principles of justice in society. Rawls believed that society is fundamentally good at equal distribution, unless unequal distribution benefits the most disadvantaged. However, there is controversy among scholars regarding the practical feasibility of its ideas, with some believing that it has an idealistic color and requires specific social conditions to support it; Part of it points out the contradiction between formal equality and substantive equality, such as the fact that although the college entrance examination is formally equal, the results may not be fair. Rawls argues for the practical possibility of the principle of justice through concepts such as public reason and overlapping consensus, but his theory still faces challenges in resource allocation and individual differences. Rawls’ ideas were influenced by Wittgenstein, emphasizing moral consensus and social stability, but his view of equality is the priority and practical path in a dynamic society that still need further exploration.
