Translation Strategies and Translator Style in the Wordplay of The Two Gentlemen of Verona—A Comparative Study of Zhu Shenghao’s and Liang Shiqiu’s Translations
摘要: 本文以莎士比亚喜剧《维洛那二绅士》中的文字游戏为研究对象,对比分析朱生豪与梁实秋两个中译本的处理策略。研究发现,面对谐音双关、语义双关、飞白等不同形式的文字游戏,朱译多采用归化策略,通过创造性替换力求保留喜剧效果;梁译则更倾向于异化策略,注重字面对等并辅以注释。本研究揭示了两位翻译家不同的风格取向,也为文学翻译中“不可译”现象的处理提供了有益案例。
Abstract: This study focuses on the wordplay in Shakespeare’s comedy The Two Gentlemen of Verona, conducting a comparative analysis of the translation strategies employed by Zhu Shenghao and Liang Shiqiu in their Chinese versions. The research reveals that Zhu’s translation tends to adopt a domestication strategy when dealing with various forms of wordplay, such as homophonic puns, semantic puns and malapropisms, striving to preserve the comic effect through creative substitution. In contrast, Liang’s translation leans towards a foreignisation strategy, prioritising literal equivalence supplemented by annotations. The study highlights the distinct stylistic approaches of the two translators, offering a valuable case study on how to handle the “untranslatability” of wordplay in literary translation.
