A Study on the Visual Language of Illustrations in Journals in the 1920s and 1930s

摘要: 在20世纪20至30年代中期上海涌现出多本图文并茂的期刊杂志，其中一些代表性的如《时代漫画》《上海漫画》等独树一帜，其内容的开放性和包容性令人称道，并且还刊登了后来成为中国20世纪文化界领军人物的许多人们耳熟能详的艺术家作品。然而，最引人入胜的是这些代表性的期刊插画为我们打开了一扇窥探过去的万花筒般的视觉窗口。毫无疑问，杂志页面上那些生动的插图漫画，以强烈的视觉冲击力展现了中国20世纪初所面临的种种重大危机和社会矛盾。

Abstract: In the mid-1920s and mid-1930s, multiple illustrated journals and magazines emerged in Shanghai, among which some representative ones such as “Modern Sketch” and “Shanghai Manhua” were unique. Their openness and inclusiveness in content were commendable, and they also published many well-known works of artists who later became leaders in China’s 20th century cultural circles. However, what is most fascinating is that these representative journal illustrations open a kaleidoscope like visual window for us to glimpse into the past. Without a doubt, the vivid illustrations and comics on magazine pages vividly showcase the various major crises and social contradictions that China faced in the early 20th century with strong visual impact.
