多模态理论下《妻妾成群》英译本的副文本研究
A Study on the Paratexts of the English Translation of Qiqiechengqun from the Perspective of Multimodal Theory

摘要: 本文基于多模态理论,以《妻妾成群》杜迈可英译本Raise the Red Lantern的内外副文本为研究对象,探析多模态副文本对于译本传播的影响。研究发现:译者通过多模态内外副文本协同助力译本传播。内副文本以语言和视觉模态呈现,书名传达文化内涵,吸引读者注意;译者序言引领读者理解作品、领会译者的翻译思想;封面呼应文本主题;封底拉近读者与作者之间的距离。外副文本结合语言与视听模态,通过译者的专业能力和学术背景提高译本的影响力;专业读者的评论提升译本的学术价值,大众读者的反馈促进译本推广;改编电影的视听符号引起情感共鸣,营造沉浸式体验。本文揭示了多模态副文本促进译本传播的效果,对于促进中国文学在国际语境的有效传播具有重要意义。
Abstract: This study adopts multimodal theory to analyze the impact of multimodal paratexts on the dissemination of Raise the Red Lantern, an English translation of Qiqiechengqun by Michael S. Duke. The findings show that the translator uses multimodal peritexts and epitexts to coordinately facilitate the dissemination of the translation. Peritexts are presented through verbal and visual modalities: the title conveys cultural connotations and attracts readers’ attention; the translator’s preface guides readers in understanding the translation and grasping the translator’s thoughts; the front cover echoes the theme of the text and the back cover shortens the distance from readers to the translator. Epitexts are the combination of verbal and audiovisual modalities: the translator’s professional expertise and academic background enhance the translation’s influence; reviews from professional readers enhance its academic value and the feedback from general readers promotes its popularization; and the audiovisual elements of the adapted film evoke emotional resonance and create an immersive experience. The study underscores the effects of multimodal paratexts in promoting the dissemination of translations, which is crucial for fostering the effective dissemination of Chinese literature in international contexts.
