Abstract: This article focuses on the first chapter of the Tang dynasty compilation on calligraphy, “Mosu”, titled “The Fifty-Six Types of Script”, and explores its value as a mixed-genre literary document from the medieval period. By situating “The Fifty-Six Types of Script” within the development of mixed-genre writings, it becomes evident that its content reflects a breakthrough from traditional writing norms and an audacious expansion of artistic boundaries. Although some parts of the text may seem to draw on legendary accounts and appear absurd, its significance lies in the systematic yet exaggerated narrative that expresses the Tang people’s imagination regarding the historical, mystical, and socio-political-cultural meanings embedded in script forms. The paper examines the classification of calligraphy styles, analyzes how they reflect the Tang-era perception of calligraphy transitioning from utilitarian function to artistic self-consciousness, and emphasizes their connections with political culture, prophetic thought, and ideology.
