The Worldwide Dissemination of Aurel Stein’s Works on the Western Regions and Their Translations

摘要: 上世纪初，英国考古学家斯坦因四次踏上西域这片土地进行考古活动，并将其考察经历详实记录于著作之中。本文从馆藏量、专业书评及读者评论三个维度，对斯坦因西域著作及译本的全球传播脉络展开研究，发现：1) 其馆藏以欧亚为中心广泛分布，再版及时，多语种译本，受到广泛关注和高度重视。2) 从有限的专业书评和读者评价反馈总体积极，认可其记录西域历史的真实价值。然而，翻译质量是其传播的核心瓶颈。本研究通过此个案，旨在深化对近代西域考察文献知识传播路径的理解。

Abstract: In the early 20th century, the British archaeologist Aurel Stein conducted four archaeological expeditions in the Western Regions, meticulously documenting his investigations in a series of works. This study examines the global dissemination of Stein’s works and their translations in the Western Regions through three dimensions: library collection holdings, scholarly book reviews, and reader feedback. The findings indicate that: 1) His works, widely collected with a focus on Eurasia, have been reprinted promptly and translated into multiple languages, attracting extensive attention and high regard. 2) Limited available scholarly and reader reviews are generally positive, recognizing the authentic value of his records of Western Regions history. However, translation quality emerges as a critical bottleneck hindering further dissemination. Through this case study, this research aims to deepen the understanding of knowledge dissemination pathways concerning modern Western Regions exploration literature.
