A Comparative Study of the Metaphor “Time Is a Flowing Object” in the Poems of Bai Li and Robert Frost

摘要: 在概念隐喻理论中，“时间是流动的物体”是一种典型的隐喻，广泛存在中英文的诗歌中。本文首先从概念隐喻理论和文化图式理论来对比分析李白和Frost的代表诗歌中的“时间是流动的物体”隐喻的构建方式，然后从认知结构、语言呈现和文化背景三个方面来探讨两者的差异。研究发现，两位诗人虽都通过流动意象表达时间的消逝，但李白多以水、云、月等自然意象来表达时间流逝，而Frost则以道路、旅程等意象表现个体抉择。最后，本文丰富了概念隐喻理论在跨文化诗歌研究中的应用，为时间隐喻研究提供了一定的理论参考和启示。

Abstract: Within the framework of Conceptual Metaphor Theory, “time is a flowing object” is a typical metaphor widely found in both Chinese and English poetry. This paper first compares the construction of “time is a flowing object” metaphor in the representative poems of Bai Li and Robert Frost through the lenses of Conceptual Metaphor Theory and Cultural Schema Theory. It then explores their differences from three perspectives: cognitive structure, linguistic representation, and cultural background. The study finds that although both poets express the transience of time through images of flow, Bai Li often employs natural imagery such as water, clouds, and the moon to depict temporal passage, while Frost tends to use imagery like roads and journeys to symbolize personal choices. Finally, this research enriches the application of Conceptual Metaphor Theory in cross-cultural poetic studies and provides theoretical insights and implications into the study of time metaphors.
