Pragmatic Analysis of “Love in a Fallen City” from the Perspective of Relevance Theory

摘要: 本研究以关联理论为框架，对张爱玲的《倾城之恋》进行语用分析。在界定理论核心概念后，文章重点剖析了小说在人物对话与情节推进中的语用现象，具体探讨了对话的明示与隐含意义、语境效果的营造及最佳关联的实现。本研究以关联理论为框架，对《倾城之恋》的人物对话进行语用分析，旨在揭示人物心理与作品主题。通过实例，本文论证了作者如何运用语用策略来塑造人物、推动叙事，并证实了关联理论在小说分析中的适用性。此外，研究还探讨了关联翻译理论的三大要素——明示–推理过程、语境效果与最佳关联——如何指导译者提升译文的准确性与可读性。最后，本研究得出结论：关联理论为解析小说人物的心理与交际意图提供了清晰的框架，为文学语用分析开辟了新视角，从而深化了对张爱玲作品丰富内涵的理解。

Abstract: Based on relevance theory, this study conducts a pragmatic analysis of the dialogues in Eileen Chang’s “Love in a Fallen City”. After defining the core theoretical concepts, the article focuses on analyzing pragmatic phenomena in the novel’s character dialogues and plot progression, specifically exploring the explicit and implicit meanings of dialogues, the construction of contextual effects, and the realization of optimal relevance. Using relevance theory as the framework, this study conducts a pragmatic analysis of the character dialogues in “Love in a Fallen City”, aiming to reveal the characters’ psychology and the thematic essence of the work. Through concrete examples, it demonstrates how the author employs pragmatic strategies to shape characters and advance the narrative, while also verifying the applicability of relevance theory in fictional analysis. Furthermore, the study explores how the three core principles of relevance translation theory—the ostensive-inferential process, contextual effects, and optimal relevance—can guide translators in enhancing the accuracy and readability of the translated text. In conclusion, the research affirms that relevance theory provides a clear framework for interpreting characters’ psychological and communicative intentions, opens up new perspectives for literary pragmatic analysis, and thereby deepens the understanding of the rich connotations in Eileen Chang’s works.
