Abstract: James O’Connor’s “dual crisis” theory profoundly reveals the intrinsic logic of coexisting and mutually reinforcing economic and ecological crises under capitalism. This paper aims to systematically outline the core tenets of O’Connor’s “dual crisis” theory, with a particular focus on its “second contradiction”—the conflict between productive forces, production relations, and conditions of production. Building on this foundation, the paper will explore the theory’s profound insights into elucidating contemporary global ecological crises and the dilemmas of financialized economies. Ultimately, it will argue the theoretical implications and critical perspectives it offers in pointing toward a path toward a post-capitalist civilization transition.
