An Analysis of English Translations of “Ascending the Height” from the Perspective of Translator’s Subjectivity—A Case Study of Xu Yuanchong’s and Zhang Xueqing’s Versions

Abstract: This paper begins by introducing the theoretical framework of translator’s subjectivity, encompassing aspects such as esthetic consciousness, translation style, and creativity. It then analyzes the translation strategies and characteristics of two renowned translators, revealing how they embody their subjectivity in their respective translations of “Ascending the Height.” For instance, Xu Yuanchong’s version emphasizes the musicality and rhythm of the poem, striving to recreate the phonetic beauty of the original within the English language. His translation reflects a profound comprehension of the source text coupled with a deep consideration for English idiomatic expression. In contrast, Zhang Xueqing’s translation focuses on conveying the poem’s artistic conception and cultural connotations. His rendition demonstrates a sensitivity to the expectations of the target cultural readership while maintaining fidelity to the original. This paper elucidates how translators employ their unique strategies and considerations to guide readers into the world of the poem. Finally, the study concludes by underscoring the importance of translator’s subjectivity in literary translation and offers suggestions for its practice. The full exertion of translator’s subjectivity is pivotal for the effective cross-cultural dissemination of literary works, while the recognition and respect thereof are instrumental in enhancing translation quality and fostering dialogue between diverse cultures.
