A Comparative Analysis of the Three English Versions of Slow Slow Tune Based on the Three-Dimensional Transformation Framework
Abstract: Eco-translatology, a significant translation theory proposed by Chinese scholar Hu Gengshen, conceptualizes translation as a process of adaptation and selection conducted by the translator within a specific ecological environment. A translation is thus the outcome of the translator’s adaptive choices across linguistic, cultural, and communicative dimensions, with the optimal translation achieving the highest degree of integrative harmony among these dimensions. Li Qingzhao’s Slow Slow Tune stands as a masterpiece of Song poems, noted for its refined diction, profound emotion, and rich cultural symbolism. Translating such a poem entails not only linguistic and rhythmic challenges but also the transference of its cultural and affective depth. Therefore, this study adopts the “three-dimensional transformation” framework of eco-translatology to analyze three English versions of Slow Slow Tune—by Yang Xianyi & Gladys Yang, Lin Yutang, and Xu Yuanchong, aiming to identify the version with a higher degree of “integrated adaptive selection”.
