After the Prosperity Fades: An Analysis of the Pension Issues of Palace Maids in the Tang Dynasty
Abstract: In the Tang dynasty, there was no specialized system for the elderly care of palace maids. The core support came from three main entities: the imperial court, families, and temples. The overall situation was characterized by “significant class differentiation and uneven care effects”. Elderly care for palace maids within the palace was led by the imperial court, with benefits such as pensions, clothing supplies, and medical services in the sick ward provided based on their ranks. High-ranking palace maids received generous rewards and could live in private residences outside the palace, while lower-ranking ones were often confined to the deep palace and, upon old age or illness, were sent to the sick ward and buried in the “Palace Maid Slope” after death. Some palace maids found support for their old age by having daughters to care for them or by entering Buddhism or Taoism, with temples becoming important places for the disposal of unwanted palace maids by the imperial family and for those who chose to spend their old age there voluntarily. Although the Tang government made several large-scale releases of palace maids and provided support through material assistance and tax exemptions, the elderly care of those who left the palace still faced difficulties: the fortunate ones returned home or married commoners, eunuchs, or lower-ranking officials and relied on their families for care; many others, due to the passage of time and having no home to return to, either became nuns or Taoists in temples or turned to prostitution and lived on the streets. The elderly care arrangements of the Tang government, although covering some groups, failed to take care of all palace maids, and the miserable situation of the lower-class palace maids in their old age reflected the class limitations and the gap between reality and ideals of the elderly care system in the Tang dynasty.
