The Influence of Peer “Phubbing” on Mobile Phone Addiction of College Students
Abstract: As “phubbing” becomes routine in university students’ daily interactions, this study examines how peer phubbing shapes mobile-phone addiction and tests the mediating roles of peer pressure and descriptive norms regarding phone snubbing. A total of 382 valid questionnaires (Mage = 21.0 ± 1.45) were collected through cluster sampling from one university in Hubei Province. The Peer Phubbing Scale, Mobile-Phone Addiction Scale, Peer Pressure on Mobile-Phone Use Scale, and Perceived Norms of Phubbing Scale were administered. Structural-equation modelling yielded three key findings: 1) Peer phubbing significantly predicted university students’ mobile-phone addiction (β = 0.13, p < 0.05); 2) Both peer pressure and phubbing norms served as parallel partial mediators, accounting for 16.1% (effect = 0.05) and 41.9 % (effect = 0.13) of the total effect, respectively, with the combined indirect effect explaining 58.1% of the total effect; 3) The results remained robust after controlling for gender and grade level. The findings corroborate social-norms theory and impression-management theory, delineate a “peer-norm-addiction” social-contagion pathway, and provide empirical guidance for campus interventions aimed at reshaping group norms to reduce phubbing.
