Abstract: As a core component of traditional ritual culture, the Confucian funeral and sacrifice rituals are not founded on the belief in the existence of the deceased’s soul or the afterlife. Instead, they embody rich ethical values in the present world. This article, based on the Confucian classics “Three Rituals” and pre-Qin Confucian ethical thought, combines relevant academic research findings to systematically explore the core significance and value of funeral and sacrifice rituals. The study reveals that the Confucian funeral and sacrifice rituals are centered around the emotional core of “affinity” and kinship, with ethical principles of “respecting the dead and honoring the ancestors” and “respecting relatives and elders.” Through institutionalized ritual norms and ethical guidance, they achieve multiple goals: individual moral education, family ethical cohesion, and social order maintenance. At the individual level, funeral and sacrifice rituals promote the improvement of individual moral qualities through the practice of filial piety and the cultivation of sincerity and respect. At the family level, they strengthen kinship ties, inherit family culture and ethical norms, and consolidate the cohesion of the family community. At the social level, they promote humanistic care and rational spirit towards the living by expanding human relations norms and constructing an ethical order of “the same structure for family and country,” thereby promoting social harmony and stability. Additionally, the concepts embodied in funeral and sacrifice rituals, such as “adjusting to changes with restraint” and “emphasizing nurturing over burial,” demonstrate humanistic care and rational spirit towards the living. In modern society, clarifying the core values of funeral and sacrifice rituals, stripping away religious misinterpretations and feudal dross, is of great theoretical and practical significance for inheriting excellent traditional Chinese culture, improving the modern ethical system, and resolving contemporary funeral and burial cultural dilemmas.
