合作原则视角下《我爱露西》中修辞手法的研究

摘要: I Love Lucy是美国CBS于1951年出品,Lucille Ball和Desi Arnaz主演的情景喜剧。此片讲述了古灵精怪、善良直爽的家庭主妇Lucy的搞笑生活故事。这部剧是20世纪60年代风靡美国的一部热播电视剧,也是美国电视史上最受欢迎的喜剧。目前,在美国每年仍有四千多万观众,它也被译为数十种语言,在世界范围内广受好评。美国语言哲学家Herbert Paul Grice (1913~1988)于1975年在著作《逻辑与会话》中提出合作原则,该原则包括数量准则,质量准则,关系准则及方式准则。他认为交际双方在对话中往往有意或无意地遵循这些原则,以实现有效的沟通配合。在交际过程中,参与者需提供恰如其分的信息量;信息过多或过少,乃至信息错误或含糊,均可能阻碍交流的顺利进行。本文通过文本细读的方法,旨在分析《我爱露西》中的部分对话因违背合作原则所产生的修辞效果。研究发现:违反数量准则会产生“重复”这一修辞手法;违反质量准则会产生夸张和隐喻的修辞手法;违反关系准则会产生突降法和迂回的修辞手法;违反方式准则会产生双关语、迂回和矛盾修饰法。本研究期望给予跨文化交际及外语教学两大领域带来一些启示,以促进沟通的有效性,并提升学习者的英语语言运用能力。
Abstract: I Love Lucy is a classic American situation comedy that premiered on CBS in 1951, starring Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. The show humorously portrays the life of Lucy, a kind-hearted and straightforward housewife. As a hit television series during the 1960s and one of the most popular comedies in American TV history, it continues to attract over 40 million viewers annually in the United States. It has also been translated into dozens of languages and has been well received worldwide. The American language philosopher Herbert Paul Grice (1913~1988) proposed the Cooperative Principle in his 1975 work, Logic and Conversation. This principle consists of four maxims: the Maxim of Quantity, Quality, Relation, and Manner. Grice posited that participants in conversation generally adhere to these maxims, either intentionally or unintentionally, to cooperate effectively and achieve successful communication. In this process, interlocutors are expected to provide an adequate amount of true and relevant information, presented clearly. Violations such as providing excessive, insufficient, erroneous, or ambiguous information can hinder smooth communication. This study employs a close reading and textual analysis of selected dialogues from I Love Lucy to examine instances that arise from the violation of the Cooperative Principle. The analysis suggests that violations of the Maxim of Quantity are often manifested through repetition; hyperbole and metaphor frequently contravene the Maxim of Quality; bathos and circumlocution are common in breaching the Maxim of Relation; while pun and oxymoron typically involve violations of the Maxim of Manner. This research offers insights for the fields of cross-cultural communication and foreign language teaching. It contributes to facilitating smoother communication and enhancing English language proficiency. In foreign language teaching, adherence to the Cooperative Principle can help ensure effective interaction between teachers and learners. In cross-cultural communication, speakers need to apply the Cooperative Principle flexibly, taking into account diverse cultural contexts and situational factors.
