Brooklyn and the Construction of Individual Memory—From Nostalgia to a Sense of Belonging
Abstract: Brooklyn is Colm Tóibín’s nuanced portrayal of the construction of individual memory in the context of migration. This article offers an in-depth analysis of the complex psychological processes through which the protagonist, Eilis, negotiates old memories and forms new ones while living in a foreign land. It explores how, through her migratory experience, she reshapes her understanding of her homeland, her family, and her personal past, integrating these memories with lived experiences in a new environment. The article further examines how feelings of nostalgia influence Eilis’s decision-making when confronting life’s challenges, and how she gradually cultivates a sense of belonging that transcends geographical boundaries. By analyzing the entangled relationship between memory, identity, and belonging, this study reveals the unique perspective Brooklyn offers on the representation of individual memory in the migrant experience.
