The Multifaceted City: An Iconological Interpretation of Urban Imagery in Wings of Desire

摘要: 德国导演维姆·文德斯1987年执导的电影《柏林苍穹下》以天使视角，诗意地再现了冷战时期柏林的城市图景。潘诺夫斯基图像学理论的三大层次——前图像志描述、图像志分析与图像学阐释——可用于解析影片中那些具有象征意义的城市图景，如废墟般的波茨坦广场、分隔东西阵营的柏林墙，以及充满生机的马戏团。这些图像共同构建了柏林作为“创伤之城”“压抑之城”和“希望之城”的复杂形象。而对这些视觉元素的层层解读，最终指向了《柏林苍穹下》中城市图像所蕴含的希望之光，在历史的阴影下，柏林依然闪耀着对未来的期许。

Abstract: German director Wim Wenders’ 1987 film Wings of Desire poetically reimagines the urban panorama of Cold War Berlin through an angelic perspective. Erwin Panofsky’s iconographic theory, with its three levels—pre-iconographical Description, Iconographical Analysis and Iconological Interpretation, can be employed to decipher the symbolically significant urban images within the film, such as the ruined Potsdamer Platz, the Berlin Wall dividing East and West, and the vibrant circus. Collectively, these images construct Berlin’ s complex image as a “City of Trauma”, a “City of Oppression” and a “City of Hope”. Ultimately, the layered interpretation of these visual symbols points to the beacon of Hope embedded within the urban imagery of Wings of Desire, where Berlin, even under the shadow of history, continues to radiate anticipation for the future.
