A Comparative Study of Imagery Translation Strategies in the Chinese Translations of Alice Munro’s Nettles

摘要: 艾丽丝·门罗的小说对人性有着深刻的洞察，她的笔触在文学界独树一帜。本文通过比较门罗短篇小说《荨麻》的两个中文译本，试图阐释不同译本在自然意象和空间意象上的翻译策略差异。研究发现，马永波和杨宇军合译本倾向于采用较为忠实的直译策略，保留原文风格和意象隐喻的开放性；李玉瑶译本则通过增补等手段强化意象的视觉效果和情感张力，让其象征意义更为直观。因此，文学作品中的意象翻译不仅涉及语言层面的迁移和调整，翻译总体策略和译者主体意识的介入共同塑造文学意象在目的语文化中的重构，影响着文学译介作品的呈现度和审美体验。

Abstract: Alice Ann Munro has established a unique place in literature with her deep and intricate examinations of human nature. By comparing two Chinese versions of Munro’s short story Nettles, this paper examines the differences in translation strategies in the rendering of imagery related to nature and space descriptions. The findings suggest that Ma Yongbo and Yang Yujun tend to adopt a more source-text-oriented approach by using literal translation strategy, preserving the original style and leaving space for readers to explore the imagery’s implications. In comparison, Li Yuyao’s translation strengthens the visual effects and emotions of the imagery through amplification, making the symbolic meanings more accessible to readers. The translation of literary imagery depends not only on linguistic accuracy but also on overall translation strategy and translator subjectivity, which together shape its reconstruction and reception in the target culture.
