Abstract: Based on the normal sleep group, this study explored the effects of their pre-sleep thought content and arousal state on individual sleep quality. In the questionnaire part of the study, 301 subjects were randomly selected and their naturally occurring pre-sleep thoughts were systematically analyzed, and structural equation modeling was used to explore the mechanism of pre-sleep thought content’s influence on individual sleep quality under the effect of rumination and arousal level. In the EEG part of the study, 20 subjects were selected to participate in the sleep EEG experiments, and the reduction of low-frequency rhythm theta and alpha activities in the non-rapid eye movement period was used as a physiological indicator of individual cognitive arousal, relying on its effect on sleep quality for model validation. Combining subjective reports and objective EEG data, this study found that individuals are more likely to fall into ruminative thinking when they think about worry or anxious thoughts (including “anxiety about anxiety”, “sleep anxiety”, etc.) before going to bed, which induces persistent psychological and physiological arousal, prolongs sleep onset and affects sleep quality.
