《时间机器》中瓷器承载的他者想象与自我建构

摘要: 在赫伯特·乔治·威尔斯创作的科幻小说《时间机器》中，瓷器多次出现。瓷器在英国曾被用于想象他者与构建自我。已有《时间机器》相关研究往往只粗略论及其中的瓷器，忽略了威尔斯如何用瓷器建构他者与自我。在《时间机器》中，瓷器是威尔斯建构他者与自我的重要载体。威尔斯将他者瓷器化，将其塑造为衰败的、退化的。同时，他将时间旅行者比作打破瓷器之人，借此建构了与他者相反的繁荣的、进步的自我，实现自我夸耀。此外，威尔斯还暗示这样的自我面临威胁。
Abstract: In The Time Machine by Herbert George Wells, the porcelain appears several times. The porcelain was used by the British to imagine the Others and to construct itself. Current studies on The Time Machine have touched upon the porcelain in it, but only roughly. They have ignored how Wells has used the porcelain to construct the Others and the self. In The Time Machine, the porcelain serves as an important carrier of Wells’s construction of the Others and the self. Through chinanizing the Others, Wells portrays the Others as degenerated and degraded. Meanwhile, Wells likens the Time Traveller to a porcelain-destroyer, thus constructing a prosperous and progressive self and achieving self-boasting. Wells has also indicated that this self is threatened.
