Travel Narrative and the Construction of Diasporic Poetics in Abdulrazak Gurnah’s Paradise
Abstract: Abdulrazak Gurnah’s Paradise appropriates and reconstructs the classic model of adventure literature, transforming the travel narrative into a critical lens for examining East African colonial history and the diasporic condition. Distinct from the conqueror’s perspective found in traditional imperial texts, the novel establishes a limited third-person child focalization. Through the protagonist Yusuf’s “passive” and “silent” presence, the narrative reveals the loss and alienation of diasporic subjectivity under multiple layers of oppressive power. The novel constructs a “contact zone” characterized by the juxtaposition of multiple languages, utilizing hybrid polyphonic discourse to shatter monolingual hegemony. Meanwhile, through non-linear Messianic time and a multi-layered nested narrative structure, it formally externalizes the fragmented, dynamic, and unfinished nature of diasporic identity. This narrative strategy transforms travel from a mere spatial displacement into a cultural-psychological metaphor for “unhoming”. The open-ended conclusion, in which Yusuf fails to reach “Paradise”, not only serves as a powerful “writing back” against the ethnocentrism of classic texts like Heart of Darkness, but also establishes a unique diasporic poetics: belonging lies not in reaching a final destination, but in the eternal and arduous reconstruction of identity within cultural interstices and historical ruptures.
