Female Predicament in To Room Nineteen from the Perspective of Spatial Criticism

摘要: 多丽丝·莱辛的短篇小说《到十九号房间去》以中产阶级女性苏珊的悲剧命运为主线，呈现女性个体在现代家庭与社会空间中的困境。文章借助列斐伏尔的空间三元辩证法，从物理空间、心理空间和社会空间三个维度对文本进行分析，探究苏珊在自我规训与追求解放之间的撕裂状态。文章认为，三个空间维度的相互交织共同挤压着苏珊作为独立个体的生存可能，其悲剧折射出欧洲二十世纪中叶女性在父权话语下面临的普遍困境，引发对性别与主体性问题的深入思考。

Abstract: Doris Lessing’s short story To Room Nineteen takes the tragic fate of Susan, a middle-class woman, as its main narrative thread, and presents the predicament of female individuals within the spaces of modern family and society. By employing Henri Lefebvre’s three-dimensional dialectic, this paper analyzes the text from three dimensions, physical space, mental space and social space, and explores the torn state of Susan’s self between discipline and the pursuit of liberation. It argues that the interweaving of these three spatial dimensions jointly restricts the existential possibilities of Susan as an independent individual. Her tragedy reflects the universal plight of women in mid-20th-century Europe under patriarchal discourse, and provokes profound reflections on issues of gender and subjectivity.
