Abstract: In The Grapes of Wrath, three interlocking layers of mobility are explored: physical, capital, and affective. Physical mobility reveals how access to movement is structured by class, resources, and regulatory power. Capital mobility contrasts the relentless circulation of financial capital with the forced displacement of migrant laborers, highlighting the imbalance between capital accumulation and labor drain. Affective mobility, within family and migrant camps, exposes how forced movement fosters new forms of emotional bonds and communal solidarity. Accordingly, Steinbeck presents the paradoxical nature of mobility and further exposes the inherent contradictions of the American Dream during the Great Depression.
