An Exploration of Narrative Rhythm in Melville’s Moby-Dick
Abstract: This thesis analyses Herman Melville’s renowned work Moby-Dick from a narratological perspective, meticulously exploring the mechanics of narrative rhythm and its role in articulating the novel’s philosophical concepts. This thesis demonstrates how Moby-Dick seamlessly integrates complex literary forms with significant philosophical themes by examining the text’s spatiotemporal organization, narrative perspective, and character psychology, particularly through variations in narrative rhythm. This paper develops a multidimensional analytical framework utilising Gérard Genette’s theory of narrative tenses and integrating the research contributions of Chinese scholars like Shen Dan and Ge Fei about the narrative artistry of Moby-Dick. Initially, it examines the mechanisms of narrative rhythm deceleration, analysing how Melville employs Ishmael’s didactic digressions, Ahab’s psychological repression, and the rational counterbalance of other characters to create a “philosophical slow rhythm”. Subsequently, the study explores the avenues of narrative acceleration, demonstrating how the shift towards immediacy in the viewpoints of characters like Ahab and Ishmael, along with the compression of time and space, propels the plot towards a climax. The study emphasises the profound importance of the intertwined and cyclical relationship between rapid and slow rhythms, asserting that this rhythmic tension enhances critical themes such as the struggle for the meaning of death, free will, fate, and humanity’s limitations in relation to nature. This study transcends previous thematic analyses by investigating narrative rhythm as a dynamic system. It elucidates the metaphorical role of narrative rhythm in the formulation of death theme, so characterising Melville’s exceptional storytelling prowess and the distinctive literary allure and philosophical tension of Moby-Dick.
