Marine Spatial Writing and Identity Reconstruction in The Shipping News from the Perspective of Literary Geography
Abstract: Annie Proulx’s The Shipping News is representative of contemporary American regional writing through its distinctive representation of Newfoundland’s marine space and marginal community. The novel centers on the life reconstruction of Quoyle, a disillusioned New York journalist who relocates to Newfoundland, constructing a multi-layered Newfoundland maritime space through geographical objects and events such as coastal storms, fishing labor, oil tanker pollution, and “shipping news” writing. Drawing upon Mei Xinlin’s literary geography “Three Originals” theory as the analytical axis, this article examines the spatial positioning of Newfoundland’s maritime borderland, the textual forms of maritime scenes, the unfolding of capital logic, and the generative process of Quoyle’s local subjectivity through “shipping news” writing. The study argues that the maritime space in The Shipping News is not merely a singular natural backdrop, but a meaning structure interwoven with local experience, modern crisis, and subjective reconstruction. Through the Newfoundland maritime borderland, Proulx not only presents the survival pressures faced by borderland communities, but also reveals the possibility for modern individuals to regain expressive capacity and public responsibility through local.
