Order without a Center: The Structure of Free Play in Borges’s The Library of Babel

摘要: 博尔赫斯在《巴别图书馆》中以有限符号和固定书籍形制构造了包罗一切可能文本的图书馆。文章以德里达的“自由游戏”为理论支点，区分图书馆在空间、组合与验证三个层面的不同“无限”：空间不可穷尽，符号组合数学上有穷，意义的验证却始终无法封闭。文章认为，图书馆并非无规则的意义虚空：符号、篇幅和物质形制始终约束文本生成，而搜寻、定位、随机造书和暴力净化等恢复中心的行动，反而暴露了终极意义不可验证的性质。结尾的周期性重复虽提出内在秩序，却随即被脚注重新悬置，表明循环并非取代“全书”的新中心，而仍是结构内部可被增补的解释位置。

Abstract: In The Library of Babel, Borges builds, out of a finite set of symbols and a fixed book format, a library containing every possible text. Taking Derrida’s notion of “free play” as its theoretical anchor, this essay distinguishes three different senses of “infinity” operating within the library: an inexhaustible space, a mathematically finite set of possible symbol combinations, and a process of meaning verification that can never be brought to closure. The library, this essay argues, is not a lawless void of meaning: symbols, page length, and material form continually constrain the generation of texts, while the various attempts to restore a center—searching, locating, randomly generating, and violently purging books—end up exposing the unverifiable nature of any ultimate meaning. The cyclical repetition proposed at the story’s close offers an internal order, only to be immediately reopened by the footnote that follows it, showing that this cycle does not replace the “Total Book” as a new center but remains itself a position within the structure, still open to supplementation.
