Abstract: The Blackwater Lightship is a novel by Irish author Colm Tóibín, first published in 1999 and shortlisted for the Booker Prize. The narrative centers around the protagonist, Helen, a teacher from Dublin, who, upon learning that her estranged brother Declan was critically ill. is compelled to reunite with her family. Together, they spend a period of emotional conflict and reconciliation in a house by the Atlantic coast. This paper approaches the novel from a spatial perspective, analyzing how the three key spaces—the lighthouse, the old house, and the hospital—affect Helen’s construction of identity, and reveals the pivotal role of spatial mobility in her process of identity reconstruction. The Blackwater Lightship uses the symbolic spaces of the lighthouse, the old house, and the hospital to explore the protagonist’s identity formation and reshaping. The lighthouse symbolizes the exploration of self-identity, its light representing both hope and Helen’s fixation with, as well as confusion about, the past. The old house bears the weight of family history and emotional trauma, placing Helen in a state of tension between acceptance and resistance. The hospital, on the other hand, symbolizes both death and rebirth, forcing Helen to confront pain and engage in a re-evaluation of her identity. Helen’s movement through these varying spaces not only reflects her psychological transformation but also reveals the fluidity and complexity of identity construction.
