Abstract: Sylvia Plath was throughout her life troubled by a binary oppositional mindset that allowed for no middle ground. In her semi-autobiographical novel The Bell Jar, Plath draws on her own experiences to depict the struggles of Esther Greenwood, a female university student who, on the brink of adulthood, both resists and adapts to the patriarchal pressures surrounding her. Echoing Derrida’s ideas, Plath repeatedly deconstructs binary oppositions in the novel, rejecting any notion of “ultimate meaning” and foregrounding the indeterminacy of both text and world. By unraveling the binary oppositions of father-daughter, male-female, and life-death, she challenges traditional representations of womanhood and suggests that only by breaking free from traditional constraints can Esther, and, by extension, American women at large, achieve genuine redemption.
