Abstract: “Female suspense” is a noteworthy phenomenon in contemporary women’s writing, referring to a literary expression that draws on women’s everyday life experiences and employs suspense narrative as its formal vehicle. In Cheng Jiaoyang’s works, the core of suspense lies not in the investigation of external crimes, but in the enclosed life experiences of women across the domains of career, romantic relationships, and personal growth. The thread of suspense does not unfold through the logical deduction typical of genre fiction, but rather through the gradual disentanglement of women from their surrounding networks of relationships. In terms of narrative strategy, Cheng Jiaoyang constructs layers of suspenseful tension by foregrounding the subjective perspective of her female characters, interspersing experiences of displacement in foreign cities, and exploiting the cognitive limitations inherent in restricted points of view. In this way, Cheng Jiaoyang’s “female suspense” writing transcends the entertainment-oriented narrative of genre fiction, becoming a form of social diagnosis that employs suspense as its method.
